IMB Centre for Rare Diseases Research

A rare disease is a life-threatening or chronically debilitating disorder that affects fewer than 1 individual in 2000 (European Organisation for Rare Diseases). While individually rare, they are collectively common, with approximately 8000 known rare diseases affecting over 1.2 million Australians. Most rare diseases are inherited, and while many affect children, a number only only manifest in adulthood. IMB’s Centre for Rare Diseases Research will identify, confirm, and understand the causes of rare diseases with the aim of enhancing diagnosis and finding new treatments.
